Kansas City, fresh off its first loss of the season, heads to Oakland on Thursday night to kick off Week 7 of the National Football League season. League rushing leader Kareem Hunt was held to 21 yards last week in a 19-13 loss to Pittsburgh. Hunt and the rest of the offense will have to return to early season form if Kansas City is going to defeat its AFC West rivals for the sixth consecutive time. Yes, Oakland has lost five in a row to the Chiefs and the men in black have lost four straight games this season since starting the year 2-0. Cortana’s prediction – Kansas City Chiefs to win – 67% chance
In Buffalo, Tampa Bay backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is ready to go if starter Jameis Winston cannot. Winston injured a shoulder in last week’s loss to Arizona. Fitzpatrick is no stranger to Ralph Wilson Stadium where he has played 26 times. Should Fitzpatrick start, he will have to contend with a Bills defense that is pretty good. Buffalo is No. 1 in the NFL in scoring defense yielding just 14.8 points per game. Cortana’s prediction – Buffalo Bills – 51 % chance
In other AFC East action, the New York Jets head to Miami to take on the 3-2 Dolphins. Miami somehow found a way to beat Atlanta last week. The Dolphins return home to face their division rival, a team they have lost to in four of the six previous meetings. Miami did beat New York the last time the two teams played in Miami. Cortana’s prediction – Miami Dolphins – 55% chance. New England will take on the Falcons in a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl. Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski returned last week to give the offense a boost and the New England defense is improving. Cortana’s prediction – New England Patriots – 58% chance
The Bears (2-4) probably picked the wrong week to be playing Carolina. The Panthers (4-2) are coming off a tough loss to Philadelphia last Thursday night. Chicago can run the football – the Bears average 136 yards per game, third in the league – but can’t do much of anything else. Carolina has plenty of weapons and a defense that is fourth against the run and fifth in total defense. Cortana’s prediction – Carolina Panthers – 63%
Green Bay must move on without Aaron Rodgers, who will miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken collarbone in last week’s loss to Minnesota. Brett Hundley takes over for the Packers who welcome New Orleans to Lambeau Field on Sunday. The Saints offense, led by QB Drew Brees, exploded for 52 points last week in a win over Detroit. New Orleans started the year with two losses and has won three straight since. In other NFC North action, Minnesota (4-2) will take on Baltimore (3-3) while Detroit has a bye. The Vikings defense is fifth in the NFL in scoring defense (17.2 points per game). The Ravens are 31st in passing offense and rely on RB Alex Collins who has 335 yards rushing. Cortana’s prediction – Minnesota Vikings – 64% chance
The NFL’s two 0-6 teams are in action again. Cleveland will entertain Tennessee which is coming off a big Monday night win. Marcus Mariota threw for 306 yards and a touchdown in the win over Indianapolis that put the Titans (3-3) in first place in the AFC South. The other winless team, San Francisco, welcomes Dallas to the Bay area. The Cowboys were off last week and lost the previous two weeks. Running back Ezekiel Elliott will play Sunday after his on-again-off-again suspension battle.
Jacksonville is an inconsistent 3-3 thus far this season. The Jags will face AFC South opponent Indianapolis, a team they have beaten just twice in the last nine meetings. The Jags have won two of the last three though.
The Rams continue to lead the NFL in scoring averaging 29.8 points a game. They are also 4-2 and in first place in the NFC West. They will take on Arizona which got a spark from RB Adrian Peterson last week. The Cardinals are last in the NFL in rushing, but Peterson ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns last week. Cortana’s Prediction – Arizona Cardinals – 53%
Seattle, which is just a half-game behind the Rams at 3-2, will take on the New York Giants who finally won a game last week. History is not on the Giants’ side. The last three times they have played the Seahawks the Giants have lost. That includes two losses at MetLife Stadium, the site of Sunday’s game.
The Steelers and Bengals will battle in the AFC North in Pittsburgh on Sunday. Pittsburgh has won each of the last four games against Cincinnati and the Steelers are coming off a huge win over previously unbeaten Kansas City. Denver, which lost to the Giants last week, travels to take on the Chargers, who have beaten the Broncos just twice in the previous 13 meetings between the two teams. Denver has beaten the Chargers once already this season, 24-21 back on September 11.
The week concludes when the 5-1 Philadelphia Eagles entertain Washington. The Eagles are for real. Carson Wentz is playing like a seasoned veteran. The running game is fifth in the league averaging 132.5 yards a game and the defense is the NFL’s best against the run. The Eagles beat the Redskins 30-17 in the season opener. It was Philadelphia’s first win over Washington since the 2014 season.
